Job Description

The Sr. IT Analyst will administer the functions and applications of clinical information systems. This includes system application installation and configuration of the application and interfaces thereof in support of the test and production environments, production application management and support, user management and support, software maintenance and upgrades, security plan documentation and compliance, periodic business continuity and disaster recovery testing, coordination of user support

The Sr. IT Analyst may participate in strategic and tactical planning regarding research infrastructure and architecture and may participate in performance appraisals and hiring initiatives.

Key is sustainment of the core clinical research production environment. This individual may need to act as the technical liaison with the Vendor and business owner for the system and application. The applications are hosted on multiple systems layer platforms, including RHEL, MySQL, Oracle and virtualized infrastructure including virtualized desktop technologies.

Primary Job Responsibilities

  • Provide ongoing day-to-day technical support of clinical and basic science research software application(s) and monitoring of interfaces and modules.
  • Provide knowledge-based content or technical expertise for the implementation and support of the application(s) and solution(s) with respect to software and databases.
  • On-call for application related issues and resolution, including working with various teams in problem resolution.
  • Deploy business continuity and disaster recovery strategies and test recovery periodically for application/systems in support of application disaster recovery strategies.
  • Participate in creation, implementation, execution and periodic updates of System Security, Business Continuity, and Disaster Recovery Plans
  • Maintain system logs and conduct periodic reviews in accordance with log review standards for application log review and compliance.
  • Maintain appropriate application design documentation as well as infrastructure diagrams and hardware inventory.
  • Maintain appropriate installation, maintenance, change, troubleshooting, and root cause analysis documentation for portfolio of applications.
  • Identify and recommend candidate technologies to improve the department’s infrastructure, architecture, and operations.
  • Develop and implement automated at-scale configuration, deployment, and maintenance of research applications utilizing configuration management and infrastructure automation technologies.
  • Collaborate with software and database developers and other research teams to ensure cohesive, secure, and best-practice adhering operations between informatics development efforts and system administration operations.
  • Serve as primary contact for application functionality and usage.
  • Act as a technical consultant to team members.

Systems Administration and Support:

  • Support and maintain any non-standard hardware, operating system, and associated infrastructure required for the application(s).
  • Monitor system performance, diagnoses system issues, performs scheduled and emergency maintenance utilizing tools such as Splunk and Nagios.
  • Propose and implement system enhancements.
  • Evaluate system upgrades and patches, implementing changes per change management policies and procedures.
  • Create and maintain automated system backups and procedures.
  • Maintain documentation and procedures to ensure adherence to institutional, state and federal policies and regulations.
  • Seeks and take advantage of opportunities to expand knowledge of DOCR operations beyond normal requirements or expectations.
  • Understands system validation and documentation in a regulatory environment.
  • Maintain relevant and current knowledge with the application, database and operating system of the clinical system.
  • Communicates regularly with internal and external customers, to ensure the delivery of high quality systems and application documentation.
  • Proactively identifies and facilitates opportunities to enhance the quality and cost-effectiveness of IT services across the organization.
  • Understands the role of the Office of Research Informatics in the overall corporate strategy and planning, and helps set objectives that are aligned with this role.
  • Achieves a balance between individual, departmental and organization needs.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to accept new or additional responsibility.
  • Some interaction with desktop operating systems and hardware.


Security and Compliance (all hardware, devices, and software):

  • Design, implement, maintain, upgrade, and patch systems to be compliant with security policies and standards regarding protection from external and internal security attacks.
  • Administer, validate, and review user and system accounts, access controls, audit logs and system integrity to maximize system security and data confidentiality.
  • Implement, maintain, and upgrade virus protection for all associated hardware and devices. Maintain associated documentation in compliance with applicable standards.
  • Research and remediate vulnerabilities.

Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, MIS, Business, or other related field or equivalent experience.



  • Solid knowledge of application development and security procedures.
  • Solid understanding of the software development life cycle (SDLC)
  • Solid understanding of relational database concepts and products; Oracle and MySQL preferred.
  • Experience participating in system architecture design.
  • Experience in version management and change control discipline.
  • Experience with version control systems, such as Git/GitHub/GitLab
  • Experience with automated configuration management and infrastructure automation tools, such as Chef/Puppet/Ansible.
  • Minimum of 3 years’ operational experience in the areas of:
    • Experience with design, implementation, and support of Linux; RHEL preferred.
    • Experience supporting applications in virtualization strategies across multiple technologies/platforms, such as VMWare, OpenStack, and Docker.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects, performed by a diverse group of professionals
  • Preferred experience:
    • Experience managing a clinical system in an enterprise environment.
    • Experience with database administration; Oracle and MySQL preferred.
    • Experience with SSO technologies; Shibboleth, OAuth, and LDAP preferred.
    • Experience with EDC applications such as REDCap
    • Experience with common programming languages such as Ruby, Python, Perl, Java.
