SQL DBA Job Description

The primary responsibilities of the Application Database Administrator (DBA) include owning, tracking and resolving database related incidents and requests, fulfilling requests and resolving incidents within SLAs, reviewing service related reports (e.g. database backups, maintenance, monitoring) on a daily basis to ensure service related issues are identified and resolved, responding to database related alerts and escalations and working to come up with strategic solutions to recurring problems.

The Application DBA role requires a service oriented mentality, high sense of ownership of the problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with the SLAs, establishing and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with status of their requests, initiating and performing changes on production systems, proactively escalating any issues that cannot be resolved within the established timeframes and collaborating with the application development teams for performance tuning.

Essential Functions:

  • Optimization of queries and heavy application troubleshooting
  • Design and implement database Backup/Recovery, Clustering and Failover strategies
  • Monitor databases to ensure optimal performance and utilization of hardware resources
  • Work with software development staff to ensure data entity and schema design follows best practices and departmental standards as well as provide feedback to architects to ensure database design is in line with the departmental strategic vision.
  • Participate in the design and regular testing of disaster recovery procedures

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or relevant field
  • Experience:  10+ years of experience in database administration

Specific Job Skills:

  • Technical experience software development using a variety of leading edge technologies including Microsoft SQL Server 2012 and 2016
  • Configuration of databases in cluster and high availability configurations
  • Knowledge of ETL tools a plus
  • Attention to detail
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, replication issues, connectivity issues, security issues.
  • Experience in Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO) using native monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention
  • Expert experience in implementing operational automation
  • Knowledge of indexes, index management, and statistics
  • Knowledge of SQL Server tools (Profiler, DTA, SSMS, SAC, SSCM, PerfMon, DMVs and system stored procedures)
  • SQL Development - ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Code and design (stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes and constraints)
  • Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory and proper disk configurations
  • Good communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to learn quickly and retain knowledge to apply to new situations
